Carrying Eggs out of Egypt
There is a story brought down in a little-known midrash that Bnai
Yisrael carried hardboiled eggs out of Egypt. These were dipped in the
salt water of the Yam Suf and enjoyed during the very first seder.
Some families still observe this tradition by carrying large, bulbous
objects, around the dining table. Others content themselves with a
symbolic representation of the event on special vessels used only at
the seder table.
Such is the bowl displayed here,
decorated with a frieze of labors required to transport the giant eggs
of yesteryear and glazed in “It Happened at Midnight” blue.
